Brief biographical review of the dramatic, intense and extraordinary life of the portuguese humanist and poet Henrique Caiado (Cayado).
Nació en Lisboa, en 1470; su padre Álvaro Caiado – que gozó de gran prestigio y aceptación en la corte portuguesa – prestó grandes servicios civiles y militares a su pais por tierra y por mar; en su ciudad natal Henrique Cayado estudió latin y gramática, fue discípulo destacado de Pedro Rombo, celebre profesor de literatura, y de Cataldo Parisio Siculo, humanista, escritor y político italiano que vivió muchos años en Portugal.
Con el apoyo financiero de su padre y con la aquiescencia del rey de Portugal, se trasladó a Italia para profundizar en su cultura y estudiar leyes en la Universidad de Bolonia.
Como prefería la literatura y la poesia a la jurisprudencia, se trasladó a Florencia atraido por el estudio de las Humanidades, siendo discipulo del gran filólogo Ángelo Policiano; más tarde, obligado por su tio Nuno Caiado y el propio Rey de Portugal, vuelve a Bolonia donde fue discípulo de Filipe Beroaldo. Además de las ciudades citadas residió en Ferrara y Pádua; en alguna de ellas ejerció como profesor de su Universidad.
Según la opinión de algunos eruditos, las obras de Caiado retratan la belleza estilística de su arte y el pensamiento humanista de su tiempo. De sus obras poéticas en latin, solamente está traducida As Éclogas (por el profesor Wilfred Mustard; The Éclogues of Enrique Cayado):
– As Trés Silvas (sin traducir).
– Os Epigramas (sin traducir).
Fallecio en 1508 ó 1509 y está considerado entre los dos poetas portugueses más destacados de la época del Renacimiento.

Born in Lisbon in 1470, his father Alvaro Caiado – who enjoyed great prestige and acceptance in the Portuguese court – served civilian and military to his country by land and sea; in his hometown, Henrique Caiado studied Latin and Grammar, was a prominent disciple of Peter Rombo, a literature held teacher, and Cataldo Parisio Siculo, a italian humanist, writer and politician who lived many years in Portugal.
With financial support from his father and with the acquiescence of the King of Portugal, Henrique Caiado traveled to Italy to deepen their culture and study laws at the University of Bologna.
As he preferred literature and poetry than jurisprudence, he went to Florence attracted by the study of humanities, to be disciple of the great philologist Angelo Policiano; later, bound by his uncle Nuno Caiado and the King of Portugal, he went back to Bologna, where he was disciple of Filipe Beroaldo.
In addition to the previous cities, he lived in Ferrara and Padua; in some of them he worked as professor at the University.
In the opinion of some scholars, Caiado works portray the stylistic beauty of his art and humanistic thought of his time.
